The management issue behind the book.
In many markets, sustainability has become part of the practical conditions for doing business. Buyers ask different questions. Tenders require credible evidence. Products need to meet new expectations around materials, repair, traceability or recovery. Finance, supply chains and channels can introduce their own conditions.
The work is often treated as a reporting or compliance task. But it also affects whether a company can sell, supply, finance and grow without recurring friction. The commercial challenge is to make the necessary evidence, decisions and capabilities work together as part of ordinary business.
What it helps clarify
Three questions for management.
- 01
Where is access becoming conditional?
Identify the customer, channel, finance, supply or regulatory conditions that are beginning to affect eligibility, tender success, renewal or the practical ability to bring an offer to market.
- 02
What must work across the business?
Examine the evidence, product choices, supplier information, commercial processes and ownership that have to join up if the business is to respond credibly and reliably.
- 03
How can repeated work become easier?
Move beyond one-off requests and exceptions by building routines that reduce review time, uncertainty and cost for both the company and the customer.
The book's point of view
Access is a commercial capability
The book treats market access as more than an administrative hurdle. When requirements become part of how customers buy, suppliers qualify and capital is allocated, the quality of the response affects commercial freedom of movement.
It concentrates on the unglamorous but consequential work of making proof, coordination and delivery dependable. That work does not automatically create differentiation, but without it many businesses cannot credibly pursue the opportunities that follow.
